Hello Divorce alternatives: the money-side view
Key numbers
- Hello Divorce publishes flat prices: DIY Plan $400, Pro Plan $2,000, Plus Plan $3,500, and $500 for a single stage of the Pro Plan (Hello Divorce, Pro, Plus, Individual Plan Steps, all read 5 September 2026).
- Court filing fees are on top. Every Hello Divorce plan page carries the same line: "Court filing fees vary by county and state and will need to be paid by you" (Hello Divorce).
- It is not a law firm and says so. Its own footer disclaimer reads "Hello Divorce Inc. is not a law firm and its website as well as technology-enabled self-help services and forms are not a substitute for the advice of an attorney" (Hello Divorce).
- Cheaper forms-only option: 3StepDivorce publishes $299, or four monthly payments of $84 (3StepDivorce).
- None of these plans price the money analysis. The professional software behind that work, Family Law Software, starts at $39.95 a month plus a $99 initial charge and has no publicly priced consumer edition (Family Law Software). Our four calculators are free and need no signup.
Hello Divorce is good at the thing it sells. If your divorce is uncontested and what you want is the paperwork done properly and filed on time, it is a reasonable choice at a price you can see before you buy. This page is not an argument against it. It is a map of what a filing service covers, what it does not, and what to use for the rest.
We build free calculators for one slice of that gap: the money numbers you need before you agree to a split. We are an alternative for that slice only, not a replacement for a filing service, and we say so throughout. Every price below was read on the company's own page on 5 September 2026 and is linked so you can check it.
What Hello Divorce is, and what it costs
Hello Divorce is an online divorce company that turns your answers into state-specific and county-specific forms, and on its higher plans has a forms specialist prepare, file and track them with the court. Its about page says Erin Levine, a Certified Family Law Specialist with the California Bar, founded it in 2018 after 15 years practising California family law, with two co-founders (Hello Divorce).
Four published plans, all flat fees:
- DIY Plan, $400. Described on its page as "Customized divorce forms + instructions", with unlimited edits and downloads and step-by-step filing instructions for your county (Hello Divorce).
- Pro Plan, $2,000, or four payments of $575 a month. A forms specialist handles "form prep, filing, and tracking", and the page says you can start "even if you don't have an agreement or your spouse's participation" (Hello Divorce).
- Plus Plan, $3,500, or four payments of $1,000 a month. The Pro service plus a team of vetted experts in law, finance and parenting, with five hours of expert time included (Hello Divorce).
- Individual Plan Steps, $500. One stage only: petition and response, financial disclosures, or judgment and agreement (Hello Divorce).
Two things the price does not include. Court filing fees, which every plan page flags as yours to pay on top and which vary by county. And hourly expert time beyond what the Plus Plan bundles: the plans page offers booking "a licensed attorney, mediator, financial analyst, or coach" by the hour with no plan required, and does not publish those hourly rates (Hello Divorce).
Who Hello Divorce fits well
The plans page lets you pick any of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia, so coverage is broad, and the site publishes a divorce guide for every state (Hello Divorce). The fit is less about geography than about the shape of your divorce.
- You both agree it is over and neither of you is hiding an account. Uncontested is the whole design assumption.
- You want the process handled, not explained. The value on the Pro and Plus plans is a named person who knows which form your county wants and when it is due.
- You want a fixed price. Against a family law attorney at roughly $343 an hour and average total fees near $11,300 per spouse, a $2,000 flat fee is a genuinely different kind of bill. See our what a divorce actually costs for those comparisons.
- Your money is simple. A house, a couple of accounts, no pension, no business, and no argument about who gets what.
Where it does not fit: a contested case, a spouse who will not disclose, any safety concern, a business or professional practice, or a court deadline already running. Those are attorney situations. Read who you actually need before you buy anything.
What a filing service does not do deeply
A filing service gets the right numbers onto the right form. It is not built to tell you whether those are the right numbers to agree to. That is a different job, and for couples over 50 it is usually the expensive one. Three examples of what sits outside the paperwork:
- The marital share math. Only the part of a 401(k), IRA or pension that grew during the marriage is normally in play. Working that out means the subtraction method for account balances and a coverture fraction for a pension, using dates most people have never written down. Our Marital Share Estimator does that arithmetic for free.
- Social Security on an ex-husband's record. After a marriage of ten years or more, the rules can matter a great deal, and the figure never appears on any settlement document. Most people find out years later. Our Ex-Spouse Social Security Estimator estimates it even when you do not have his benefit amount.
- The after-tax house against retirement trade. "I keep the house, he keeps the 401(k)" is the deal that looks even and often is not, because a pre-tax retirement dollar and a home-equity dollar are not the same dollar. Our House vs. 401(k) Comparison puts both sides after tax.
To be fair to Hello Divorce: it does sell hourly access to a financial analyst, and it lists a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst among its expert services (Hello Divorce). The point is that this is a separate purchase from the filing plan, not something the $400 or $2,000 covers, and it is the purchase most people skip.
Alternatives by job, not by brand
"Alternative to Hello Divorce" is the wrong frame, because Hello Divorce is doing several jobs at once and you may only need one of them. Pick the job first.
| The job | What to use | Published or commonly reported cost | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forms and filing, handled for you | Hello Divorce Pro or Plus | $2,000, or $3,500 with five expert hours | Court filing fees are extra. Uncontested cases only. |
| Forms only, cheapest path | Hello Divorce DIY, or 3StepDivorce | $400, or $299 | You file it yourself. Your court may publish the blank forms free. |
| One stage of the process | Hello Divorce Individual Plan Steps | $500 per stage | Only worth it if you are already part way through. |
| Reaching an agreement at all | A divorce or family mediator, as a category | Commonly $3,000 to $8,000 in total, shared between two people | A mediator is neutral and does not advise either of you. We do not recommend specific mediators. |
| The money numbers before you agree | On Her Own Feet's four free calculators | Free, no signup, nothing you type leaves your browser | We are new, we publish every formula, and we do not do child support or alimony. |
| Judgment on the money, from a human | A CDFA | Roughly $120 to $500 an hour, first consultation often free | Not legal advice, and cannot file anything for you. |
| Professional settlement modelling software | Family Law Software | From $39.95 a month plus a $99 initial charge | Built for professionals. No consumer edition is priced publicly. |
| Contested, hidden assets, or any safety concern | A family law attorney | About $343 an hour. Average total fees about $11,300 per spouse, median about $7,000 | Nothing on this page substitutes for it. |
On the forms row we only list services whose price we could read on their own live page. Several other well-known form providers block automated access, so we left their prices out rather than repeat a figure we could not verify.
If you want the money-tools row in more depth, including the free tools we did not build, we compared them all in the best free divorce money calculators. For the human roles, what a CDFA is and how to vet one covers the credential and the questions to ask.
How to choose, in four plain questions
- Do you both agree, and is everything on the table? If yes, a flat-fee filing service is genuinely the cheapest sane route. If no, start with an attorney and do not buy a plan yet.
- What is your biggest asset? If it is the retirement accounts or a pension rather than the house, the money analysis matters more than the filing, and no filing plan includes it.
- Do you know your own numbers yet? If you cannot say what the marital share of the 401(k) is, or what the house is worth after tax and selling costs, get those first. Free calculators and an afternoon will do it. Everyone you hire later bills less when you arrive with figures.
- What do you want a human for? Filing and deadlines, a forms specialist. Getting to an agreement, a mediator. What the deal is worth in fifteen years, a CDFA. Your legal position, an attorney. Buy the one you actually need, not the bundle.
Where we are honest about ourselves
On Her Own Feet is new. We have no track record, no reviewer roster and no filing service. We do not take a commission from Hello Divorce, 3StepDivorce or anyone else on this page, and we do not sell introductions on it. What we offer is four free calculators, every formula published on how we make our numbers, and a refusal to tell you what to accept. Property division and support are decided by state law, by a judge or by the two of you, and no calculator on the internet changes that.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hello Divorce legit?
It is a real, named company with a public founder and a public price list. Its own about page says Erin Levine, a Certified Family Law Specialist with the California Bar, founded Hello Divorce in 2018 after 15 years practising California family law, alongside two co-founders. Its site publishes flat plan prices, names its staff and its expert network, and its own footer states plainly that "Hello Divorce Inc. is not a law firm" and that its services "are not a substitute for the advice of an attorney." That last line is the honest one: it is a filing and process company, not your lawyer and not your financial analyst.
How much does Hello Divorce cost?
As published on its own plan pages on 5 September 2026: the DIY Plan is $400, the Pro Plan is $2,000 or four payments of $575 a month, and the Plus Plan is $3,500 or four payments of $1,000 a month with five hours of expert time included. A single stage of the Pro Plan, such as the petition or the financial disclosures, is $500. Every plan page adds that court filing fees vary by county and state and are paid by you on top.
Does Hello Divorce work out the retirement split for me?
Its plans are built around preparing, filing and tracking the forms for an uncontested divorce, not around modelling the numbers you put into those forms. It does sell hourly access to a financial analyst separately, without a plan, and it lists a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst among its expert services. If the retirement accounts or a pension are your biggest asset, that hourly expert or an independent CDFA is the part you actually need, and it is a separate purchase from the filing plan.
Is there a cheaper alternative for just the paperwork?
Yes. 3StepDivorce publishes a $299 price for its online divorce forms package, with instalment options of two payments of $157, three of $109 or four of $84. Hello Divorce also notes on its own site that blank divorce forms with written instructions may be available free on your state or local court website. The difference you pay for is the guided software, the review and, on the higher plans, a person who files and tracks it for you.
Do I still need a lawyer if I use a service like this?
These services are for uncontested cases where both people agree and both are disclosing everything. If there is a safety concern, a business, a spouse who will not hand over statements, or an account you have never seen, that is attorney territory and no filing service replaces it. Many people also pay their own attorney for a single review of an agreement before signing, which costs a fraction of full representation.
What does On Her Own Feet do that a filing service does not?
One narrow thing: the money numbers you need before you agree to a split. Our four calculators cover the marital share of a 401(k) or pension, the after-tax house against retirement trade, what the ex-spouse Social Security rules could mean for you, and how long the settlement lasts. They are free, need no signup, and nothing you type leaves your browser. We do not file anything, we do not draft anything, and we are not an alternative to a filing service.
